MRKT Gallery: Backrooms
About MRKT: Nora Soliman is a curator, writer, and artist based in Berlin. She founded MRKT gallery in SF in 2020 as a platform for emerging and underrepresented voices in contemporary art. Her curatorial work centers on artists of color, women, queer, and arab creators, with a focus on expanding access and visibility within both institutional and grassroots spaces.
Backrooms: A group show at MRKT GLLRY which focuses on liminal spaces. In this exhibition there will be photography and paintings that represent these in between spaces that make you feel unsettled, nostalgic, and maybe even confused.
“ For Backrooms, I sought out a sense of uneasy vacancy. Spaces where life is absent and the lights are only on as long as the power grid lasts. I hoped using some flash would create a more foggy dreamlike feeling as well.
Casinos were ideal to chase this liminal setting. They’re an intentional time warp, a ghost town after midnight. Places of passage, gathering and entertainment lose these imparted meanings in our absence. What’s left is just an afterimage. “
